چکیده

ATPASE activities during development have been studied in rat brain (SAMSON and QuI", 1967), in nerve-ending particle fractions from rat brain (ABDEL-LATIF, BRODY and RAMAHI, 1967) and in the cerebral cortex of the kitten (HUTTENLOCHER and RAWSON, 1968), as well as in preparations of synaptosomes and microsomes of rat brain (ABDEL-LATIF, SMITH and ELLINGTON, 1970). In a previous study, we compared the activities of Na-K ATPase and total ATPase of the cerebral cortical neuronal perikaryal fraction and glial cell fraction obtained as two separate populations by a bulk-isolation procedure (MEDZIHRADSKY, NANDHASRI, DOYAGA-VARGAS and SELLINGER, 1971). In that study on 18-20-day-old rats, the glial cell fraction exhibited levels of both activities markedly higher than those of the neuronal fraction. In the present work, the activity of the Na-K ATPase and of the ouabaininsensitive ATPase were determined in the two cellular fractions during the postnatal development of rat cerebral cortex. The results of this study may contribute to our knowledge of the formation of cellular processes and synaptic junctions, elements rich in Na-K ATPase (KUROKAWA, SAKAMOTO and &TO, 1965; SKOU, 1965; WHITTAKER, 1965; ABDEL-LATIF et a/., 1967; APPEL, AUTILIO, FESTOFF and ESCUETA, 1969), especially since HU~TENL~CHER and RAWSON (1968) found a close correlation between the activity of this enzyme and the spontaneous cortical activity during development in kitten cerebral cortex.

Adenosine triphosphatase activity in clial cells and in neuronal perikarya of edematous rat brain.

The activity of Na,K-ATPase and the ouabain insensitive ATP-hydrolyzing activity was studied in fractions of glial cells and of neuronal perikarya isolated in bulk from cortex and subcortical white matter of rats, previously treated with intraperitoneal administration of water. With increasing water load, the cortical Na,KATPase activity markedly decreased in glial cells and was slightly elevat...

The role of glia in neurological disease

Glial cells form a network in the central nervous system to support neurons and interact with them. The glia consist essentially of astrocytes that help with the nutrition of neurons and react in some cases of injury, oligodendrocytes that produce myelin, and microglia that are derived from the haemopoietic system and are concerned with the immunological defense of the nervous system. Experimen...

chHDAC11 mRNA Expression During Prenatal and Postnatal Chicken (Gallus gallus) Brain Development

Background: Histone deacetylation plays an essential role in transcriptional regulation of cell cycle progression and other evolutionary processes. Several results confirm the importance of the latest found HDAC11 gene to deacetylate histone core in neurons and their supportive cells in developing the vertebrate Central Nervous System (CNS).  Objectives: This study investigates the HDAC11 pote...

A comparison of the ATPase activity of the glial cell fraction and the neuronal perikaryal fraction isolated in bulk from rat cerebral cortex1

SINCE SKOU (1957) first described a Na-K-activated, Mgdependent, and ouabain-sensitive adenosinetriphosphatase in crab nerve, considerable evidence has accumulated to implicate this enzyme in the transport of Na and K (see reviews by SKOU, 1965; and ALBERS, 1967). The activity of this ATPase is high in membrane preparations from various organs, the highest activity being that of membranes from ...
